Motorists travelling at night on West Coast highways from this weekend may encounter road closures required for important project and maintenance work to take place.

The closures are scheduled for State Highway 6 at the Coal Creek Overbridge, and at the Aickens rail crossing on State Highway 73.

The work on SH6 at Coal Creek is for the overbridge replacement and the road is due to be closed nightly in both directions, between 9pm and 5am, from Sunday 17 May to Friday 29 May, 2026. A detour will be available via Taylorville Road and State Highway 7 for all vehicle types. More about the bridge replacement is available here.

Maintenance work at the Aickens rail crossing between Otira and Jacksons on SH73 is scheduled to take place this weekend. The road is due to close in both directions from 8pm, through to 5am the next day, on both Saturday and Sunday nights (16-17 May). The road will open for 30 minutes on both nights at 12am to allow queued traffic through the site.

Road users are encouraged to consider delaying their journeys on SH73 while these two nights of closure are in place.

If there is any scheduling change required due to weather or other circumstances at either site, notification will be provided. We thank people for their patience while these closures are in place.
