TVNZ Offers Live Online Coverage Of Melbourne Commonwealth Games

TVNZ's website will be providing live coverage of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games online – a first for New Zealand broadcasting.

Between March 15 and March 26, TVNZ will stream on tvnz.co.nz live coverage so that people without access to television will still be able to watch the Melbourne Games via the internet.

The live streaming will be complemented by specially prepared packages which will show highlights and 'kiwi moments' on demand.

These packages will also be available on demand on Telecom and Vodafone mobile phones.

The service is expected to be especially welcome because the time difference between New Zealand and Melbourne means much of the action will take place within working hours.

TVNZ successfully trialled live streaming online during the ASB Tennis Classic and the Heineken Open in preparation for the Games.

The rights have been secured for online distribution for internet connections within New Zealand – Kiwis overseas will not be able to access the live coverage.

TVNZ's Head of Content, Stephen Smith, says the move into live internet streaming and downloads on mobile phones is a taste of the future – where consumers will be able to pick and choose among numerous methods of video delivery.
