Environmental Experience Par Excellence!

Environmental Experience Par Excellence!

On a par with none, the exclusive experience of exploring the Bay of Islands on our own tall ship in the company of some of our leading environmental guardians is an extraordinary opportunity. This three-day voyage explores our area and its unique biodiversity. At the same time, passengers are also making a donation from their voyage fees to a visionary project designed to restore the native flora, fauna and birdlife back to Islands in the Bay.

On the first day, guests will sail in the Bay and hear how Project Island Song is restoring the native environment. In the company of a member of Guardians of the Bay of Islands they will actively participate by planting their own native trees and removing noxious weeds. On the following day, guests will sail around Cape Brett and along this stunning coast to Whangamumu. Here a guide will take them ashore and through the bush to the only stand of ancient kauri accessible from the coast. A reminder of less environmentally friendly times will then be given as they visit Whangamumu’s old whaling station.

Returning to the Bay provides a rare chance to visit one of New Zealand’s historic Lighthouses. This is a short but steep walk which is well worth the climb as passengers will be rewarded with outstanding views and a guided tour of the recently restored Cape Brett Lighthouse.

The journey to these remote locations takes place on board a tall ship – a graceful reminder of times past when man's impact on the environment was only minimal. Passengers on previous voyages have recorded their delight at being accompanied by dolphins and seals - and even a humpback whale. “There were so many moments to treasure” said one passenger. “The morning we woke to the dawn chorus at Whangamumu was amazing”.

Following a successful pilot in 2008, four trips will be run in 2009 in April, May and October. Trips cost $950 and include a $100 donation to Project Island Song, all accommodation and food, Project Island Song tee-shirt, native trees and certificate of planting. With only 10 spaces available for these authentic and unique trips, people interested should book now. Visit www.tucker.co.nz/eco-sail.htm or call 0800 TUCKER for more information.
