Elders responds to Levy decisions

Elders Primary Wool has been notified of the results of the various levies voted upon in the recent Meat and Wool New Zealand referendum this morning.

“This decision provides Meat and Wool NZ with clarity of direction from farmers and we are pleased to see that they are already taking the feedback on board and looking to act as soon as possible on the change in direction,” said Managing Director Stu Chapman.

“It is our view that this provides an opportunity for the industry to now move forward. ”

“Specifically in relation to the wool levy decision I would like to highlight that our attention is and always has been fully focused on growing demand from consumers for carpet made from New Zealand strong wool. It is only by creating this demand that the profitability of wool will return to growers,” said Chapman. “We believe that the decision made by growers to vote no to the wool levy is clear support for our market driven strategy.”

Chapman said that there is a strong future for New Zealand wool growers due to the global trend towards sustainable and natural products and asks growers to continue placing emphasis on growing quality wool.

“Wool’s time is coming again and we need to be proactive to take up the opportunities that we are being offered. It is through education of both consumers and those selling carpets that we will receive a better return for our product. However we must remain committed to producing the best wool in the world if we are to truly make the most of this opportunity.”
