Inaugural Vegan Pastry Awards |
||
The news that veganism is over is not true at all. Many businesses are finding it hard during these times and offering vegan options only increases their customer base. For the first time ever bakeries across the nation will be deciding which of their delicious vegan pastry items they feel have what it takes to be a winner. Why is that? The Vegan Society of Aotearoa is excited to bring a new addition to our food awards, Vegan Pastry Awards. Entries are coming in across the country as bakeries compete to see who can become the Supreme Winner.
“It’s wonderful to bring another great food award into the vegan catering arena. Many of our entrants are not vegan bakeries, yet they are able to bake delicious vegan options for their customers. We hope to inspire other bakeries to offer more vegan options on their menus and increase their customer base.” Said Vegan Society spokesperson, Claire Insley
From Fairlie Bakehouse in rural South Canterbury to Richoux Patisserie in Auckland, along with Belen, Brumby’s and many others, New Zealand’s best bakers are testing out their latest vegan wares on happy customers. Plant-based ingredients are often similarly priced to animal-based products, or even cheaper, such as a vegan margarine rather than animal fat or butter, so it makes economic sense to make some switches.
Top winner Phillipa Stevenson, owner of Tart Bakery is one of the judges in this inaugural competition. She brings her expertise of a decade of great vegan baking to the panel, Rodney Gomes, a seasoned Executive Chef with a proven track record at Sudima Auckland Airport, joins her for this pastry extravaganza. They are joined by Aaron Pucci, whose decades of judging experience have prepared him for judging anything and Jasbir Kaur, President of the Chef Association Auckland, who is keen to put these pastries to the test.
The categories for entry in this first of a kind Vegan Pastry Awards are:
· Croissant plain
· Croissant savoury
· Almond croissant
· Pain au chocolate
· Custard Square
· Danish
The judging takes place on 13th October at Crave Cafe in Auckland. For more information check out https://vegansociety.org.nz/nz-vegan-pastry-awards/
