Staff Make Themselves At Home At Work… Survey

Work is like a home away from home for Australians with 53% of workers saying that they do not change their usual behaviour when on the job according to a survey of 693 people by leading career building and networking site Linkme.com.au.

The comfort factor hasn’t been experienced by everyone though, with 47% feeling the need to switch personas to work mode from 9 to 5. The majority put on a more serious demeanor (47.9%), are far more confident (22.8%), quieten down (21.3%) or turn up their volume (5.6%) and get far more flirtatious than they would normally be in the outside world (2.4%).

There’s no point in having neighbours if you don’t get to know them hence rightly so, 54% of Australians make a concerted effort to socialise with their colleagues.

“Some people truly feel that the workplace is not a place for charm, smiles, happiness and friendships. But it certainly is the Australian way and this has crept into our local businesses.

“Organisations should be proud if they’re able to make their people feel like they can be themselves. When people are themselves, it’s when they’re likely to be able to be more creative, productive, positive and motivated.

“It’s unfortunate that some people feel they need to change their persona at work. Sometimes we try to imitate the behaviour of our seniors in order to impress them or try to fit in to the organisational culture which stems from the top.

“This is evident in this survey, which showed that the mood of the boss impacted the mood of their people”.

According to the poll, a huge 61.5% of people surveyed were effected by their boss’s frame of mind.
