ABERHART AND THE OPPOSITE OF ALCHEMY

Silver, platinum, gold and selenium are used by Laurence Aberhart to make his photographs. Using printing materials and processes invented over a century ago, his contact prints from 8 x 10 inch negatives are finer than any enlarging or digital printing method available today. Join Mark Strange, Senior Conservator of Photographs at Alexander Turnbull Library for a talk about some of the characteristics of Aberhart’s prints and a demonstration of silver-gelatin printing-out-paper, one of the finest photographic printing processes ever known.
