Cuba St Carnival Captured at City Gallery Wellington
The spirit of the Cuba St Carnival lives on in the Michael Hirschfeld Gallery’s new exhibition, CAPTURE CARNIVAL: Photography from the 2007 Cuba St Carnival, 7-22 July. The exhibition showcases 31 stunning images of the Carnival, New Zealand’s largest street festival, selected from over 200 entries in the 2007 Cuba St Carnival Photography Competition run in partnership with City Gallery Wellington.
The competition judges, renowned photographer Ans Westra, curator Luit Bieringa, official 2007 Cuba St Carnival photographer Robert Catto, Michael Hirschfeld Gallery curator Jessica Reid and founder and Artistic Director of the Cuba St Carnival, Chris Morley-Hall, looked for images that best captured the vitality and variety of the Carnival.
Jeremy Blincoe’s Untitled was the winning photograph and Michelle Quek’s The Real Hot Bitches, February 2007 gained second prize. Cuba St Carnival Whopper-Chopper Performer by Linda Strand was third and Untitled by Christine Laven and Moving and Grooving at the Cuba Carnival by Neil Price gained runner-up awards.
Open to all ages throughout New Zealand, the competition encouraged wide participation; from photographic students and enthusiasts to professionals. The entries include a range of styles and techniques, from black and white, colour, staged, incidental, digital and film photography. The 2007 Cuba St Carnival attracted over 150,000 people from around the country.
