Help For Parents When Travelling

Stories, songs and games for kids can now be downloaded from an online New Zealand travel guide. ‘Travelling Around’ is an entertainment package for children from ages four to nine.

We wanted to offer practical help for parents planning a daytrip or holiday with young children, says Alan Wylde, director of the travel website, ‘DayOut’. With a young family, travelling can be an endurance test. ‘Travelling Around’ is a contribution to making the journey enjoyable.

Eight songs are included in the story about Ruby and Jack going on holiday with Mum and Dad. Also part of the package are a gaily-coloured set of cut-out-and-dress-up figures and two games, 'Holiday Lotto' and 'Tell a story'.

The story and songs can be downloaded from the website in MP3 format, either in a single, continuous sequence or in eight parts, each featuring one of the songs.

The cut-outs and games are in pdf format, designed to be printed out on eleven A4 pages. Three extra pages can be printed with the words of the songs. Instructions are included on www.Dayout.co.nz .

‘DayOut’ focuses on downloadable audio guides about New Zealand attractions and the kids’ entertainment package is an extension of that idea, Mr Wylde says. The project is a collaboration between ‘DayOut’ and a children’s resource development company, ‘Learning Curve’. The three principals of ‘Learning Curve’ are all experienced teachers based in Wellington.
