Generosity And Google Benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters

Christchurch woman donating all profits of new business to local charity

26 May 2010. Christchurch. After years of working in opportunity shops, Christchurch woman Sara Murray has started her own charity shop in Spreydon. She has decided to donate all the proceeds to Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) after finding the organisation on internet.

Based in Stourbridge St. in Spreydon, Ms Murray says that she loves running the store. “I love meeting the people - we have everyone from people who can’t afford new clothing as well as those looking for something unique.”
“I wanted to donate the profits to a local charity, one that helped children, ,” she said, “I Googled and found Big Brothers Big Sisters.”
A parent to a teenage son, Ms Murray said she understands the benefit a positive role models like the ones Big Brothers Big Sisters provide.

BBBS Manager Matthew Button said that the organisation is astonished by Ms Murray’s generosity: “What a gesture, to commit any surplus her business makes to a charity. It is not only the money that helps but the profile of being associated with a business. We’re honoured to have been chosen.

“It’s great to see there are still people like Ms Murray in the community,” said Mr Button.

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches adult mentors – all of whom are volunteers - with a suitable child (typically aged between 8-13 years), who they meet with for one hour each week. Part of a national and international network, Big Brothers Big Sisters currently supports over 80 mentoring relationships at across the city in schools and in the community.

Funding locally is provided by Christchurch City Council, Wayne Francis Trust, Canterbury Community Trust, Lottery Grants, COGS, Child Health Services, The Blogg Charitable Trust.
