One Flew Over the Conchords’ Nest
Empire magazine, the UK cinema Bible that describes itself as ‘the biggest movie magazine in the world’, has awarded a kiwi film four stars – pushing it into the ‘excellent’ category.
This recognition for independent feature The Insatiable Moon is all the more remarkable given that it was denied funding from the New Zealand Film Commission and subsequently filmed on a shoestring budget.
Empire describes the film starring Rawiri Paratene as ‘One Flew Over The Kiwi’s Nest’, saying “There’s a remarkable sense of place and emotional power, in a moving, original movie that deserves to be seen.”
Producer Mike Riddell describes the listing as a triumph, noting that even films such as Boy have been unable to secure a distribution deal in the UK. “We always suspected we had a film that would travel,” says Riddell, “but to get this kind of response from one of the world’s leading journals has taken us by surprise.”
The film, directed by Riddell’s partner Rosemary (who has a day job as a District Court Judge), was shot on a budget of $340,000 and funded entirely by private investors.
It opens in London of 4 March at the Empire Cinema in Leicester Square, before touring the UK. Riddell describes the opening as one more step in the journey of ‘the little film that could’.
