Pixel + Time + Paint
Pixel + Time + Paint is a series of portraits and nudes executed in front of the computer during skype-video-conversations with friends and family. The work is an expression of the Sandro Kopp’s long exploration into balancing the presence captured in live portraiture sittings versus portraits painted from a photograph. It is also an "Offering" to human engagement; the continued existence of warmth and connection within new technologies of communication.
"In exploring these questions - in trying to distill the essence of the difference between these modes of painting - I had the idea of paintings made during video-web-chats: a hybrid of a painting done from life and a painting done from a photograph stripping the elements of three-dimensionality and presence away, putting a lens (of the webcam) between me and my sitter - but maintaining the elements of time passing and conversation: of engagement."
Sandro is half-German, half-New Zealander, and now lives in the far north of Scotland with his partner Tilda Swinton. Having started drawing and painting at a very young age and his art has been exhibited since his childhood. He has lived in many places, including Paris, Rome and Berlin and still spends much of his life traveling with a mobile studio.
He exhibits regularly in Germany and has exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, London, in the BP Portrait Awards exhibition, as well as the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh and the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. His piece 'The New Me' - a work comprising 28 self-portraits executed each consecutive day for a month - was exhibited at HP Garcia Gallery in New York.
Most recently, Sandro has held solo exhibitions at TSKW, in Key West- Florida and at Brachfeld Gallery in Paris. He is preparing another major show for 2012 in London.
