Re-launch for Outward Bound Cutter following Collision

Outward Bound is set to sail again with the re-launch of its cutter Matahorua, which was badly damaged in a collision in February.

The Matahorua will be re-launched at a special ceremony open to all the public and several invited guests. A crew of Outward Bound former students will make the short journey across to the Anakiwa-based school as it prepares for the monthly intake of several courses.

The ceremony gets underway on:
Saturday 9 July at 2 p.m.
At Carey’s Boatyard, Westshore, Picton

• The Matahorua is one of four distinctive naval-class cutters owned and in active use by Outward Bound.
• It was involved in a collision with a commercial catamaran on 4 February 2011 in the Marlborough Sounds. The collision destroyed the stern and midships section. Fortunately the 12 person crew sustained no serious injuries.
• Following an intensive re-building program over the past 14 weeks, it has been restored to its former glory by Boat Builders of Waikawa.
• Outward Bound chief executive, Trevor Taylor, will be attending the relaunch and will be available for interviews.
• Outward Bound is New Zealand’s leading organsiation for showing people their true potential through the outdoors, with nearly 2000 students annually attending the Outward Bound School in Anakiwa.
