ENSOC cancel Dunedin Event

ENSOC cancel Dunedin Event

Media Release 25 July 2011

It was reported by the media on Friday 22 July 2011 that the Canterbury University Engineering Society, (also known as ENSOC) would be running a trip to Dunedin in August wrongly portrayed as being the Undie 500 Car Rally.

The event was actually an organised liquor free bus trip to transport students to attend a weekend of pre-organised music and winter sporting events in central Dunedin, known as 'The Great Quake Escape'.

The idea of this event was to relieve students of the hardship they are facing in the quake city.

Following a meeting with the Dunedin City Council, Dunedin Police, and other interested parties, ENSOC have taken on board the concerns of the community, and after careful consideration decided to withdraw its participation in the event.

While this is highly disappointing for ENSOC and Canterbury students who have been through a difficult year, it is hoped that this willingness to cooperate with the Dunedin community will be seen as a positive gesture by ENSOC and a step in right direction towards restoring its reputation in Dunedin.

ENSOC, which played a large role in the Volunteer Student Army has worked hard to bring about a culture change over recent months following the tragic events of the September and February Earthquakes. It is hoped in the future that ENSOC will be able to reestablish trust in the Dunedin community and be able to bring its members to responsibly enjoy the great city.
