New Shearing Record

Te Kuiti shearer Kerri-Jo Te Huia has smashed a women's record in the King Country today by becoming the first woman to shear more than 500 lambs in eight hours.

The 30-year-old in only her fifth season of shearing shore 507 to set a new World women's record, beating the founding mark of 470 established by university graduate and Wairoa shearer Ingrid Baynes three years ago.

Despite lower back pains, Te Huia shore constantly at quicker than a lamb a minute, with successive two-hour runs of 124, 124, 133 and 126, breaking the record just before 4.26pm, and passing 500 with six-and-a-half minutes to go.
