Concert to honour musician and authority on Māori musical instruments
A concert is being held at Te Papa on Saturday night to pay tribute to musician Dr Richard Nunns, New Zealand’s foremost authority on Māori musical instruments.
The concert will honour and pay tribute to Dr Nunn’s contribution to New Zealand music over the past thirty years.
One of the concert organisers, Professor Charles Royal, says Richard has played a significant role in the revival of taonga pūoro and has dedicated his time to researching, composing, performing and teaching.
“In collaboration with the late Dr Hirini Melbourne, Brian Flintoff and many others, Richard researched traditional Māori instruments extensively, some of which had not been played for over a century.
“We can’t think of a better way to honour Richard’s major contribution to New Zealand music than to hold a concert featuring some of New Zealand’s most important musicians and artists, colleagues and collaborators.”
Last year Hirini Melbourne and Richard were joint recipients of the Lifetime Contribution to Māori Music Award. He was admitted to the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame in 2009.
