“Within Outside”
Artist Katherine Joyce-Kellaway will present her new site-specific installation, entitled “Within Outside”, at 30Upstairs Gallery in Courtenay Place, Wellington from 28 November – 21 December.
Joyce-Kellaway, an installation artist, describes her work:
“I love creating immersive installation environments that invite the audience to enter the work in order to activate it. As our everyday lives accelerate into a digitally navigated world I am interested in building environments that reconnect our body and senses to the space in which we find ourselves.”
Joyce-Kellaway has been invited by 30Upstairs to create her new work “Within Outside”. The piece is the second in a series exploring the phenomenon of reality. It responds to the quirky characteristics of each of the five spaces and the play of light. Reflection, air currents, sound and tempo are also used to create a world of sensory experience. The piece will use 200 metres of fabric, One and half tons of mineral and will take 14 days to install.
This talented emerging artist has drawn upon a number of influences including time spent in the alien landscape of the Lake Grassmere Saltworks in Marlborough, childhood memories and family stories. She has an affinity with Courtenay Place and close family ties to the area which further inform the work.
Ms Joyce-Kellaway originally comes from Taihape however has been Wellington-based for a number of years where she has worked in professional theatre. More recently she has turned her attention successfully to her work as an artist and tutor, earlier this year completing a Master of Fine Arts with distinction at Massey University.
As a result of her Masters artwork Body over Mind – ‘no body, never mind’ she was approached by 30Upstairs Gallery .
"Katherine Joyce-Kellaway’s work involved a rigorously orchestrated, highly controlled maze-like situation, which was intensely disorientating but rather than prompting anxiety or claustrophobia, it summoned an utterly childlike joy and playfulness from its willing participants." Dr. MARTIN PATRICK Senior Lecturer, Massey University.
“Katherine Joyce Kellaway's installation was a real highlight of the Massey University MFA graduation show in February this year. It offered a deliciously destabilising sensory encounter which was relished by visitors. I am excited to see how the project for 30 Upstairs develops the investigation of haptic experiences through the creation of immersive environments.” Heather Galbraith , Head of Art School and Commissioner for the Venice Biennale 2015
