Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust Inc. embraces exciting future

The Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust incorporated society sees an exciting future for itself now that the iconic garden that bears its name is in public ownership.

“The Society Board and members have had and continue to have a significant role in ensuring Pukeiti maintains its national and international status,” says the Board Chairman, Gordon Bailey. “It is an important role.”

Under a deal between the Society and the Taranaki Regional Council in 2010, the Council has taken ownership of the gardens and funds their maintenance and development. The 1000-member Society, meanwhile, consults and advises the Council over developments at the property.

“Society members are knowledgeable and passionate about Pukeiti, especially its rhododendrons, and we’re working closely with the Council to ensure that the internationally important collection maintains its integrity as it is developed and enhanced,” says Mr Bailey.

“We’re also having input into planned changes at The Lodge, which is the Society’s home base, and we’re providing substantial funding for the redevelopment of the Keiller Garden.”

The Keiller Garden redevelopment is part of a three-year upgrade programme recently approved by the Council and also including major improvements to the Gatehouse and café, and the development of new feature gardens at Pukeiti.

Mr Bailey says the upgrade programme opens up new opportunities for the Society as it works in partnership with the Council. “Pukeiti can only grow in stature and international significance, and the Society is an important part of that story. An exciting future is before us.”
