New ‘Fun at Work’ book promotes joy and self-acceptance
A newly published book on fun at work by Auckland based author Dr Kathryn Owler, promotes joy and self-acceptance at work. Fun at Work is published by Joyworkz and recounts Kathryn’s personal work journey; it highlights the value of being true to oneself in order to achieve more satisfaction at work.
Work can provide a salary, wellbeing and satisfaction; however for some people it can be exploitative, poorly paid, causing high stress, ill health and discontent. As a result of the difficulties people can have at work, Kathryn explains that “this was a book I felt I had to write. It is the story of my desire for, and fascination with, fun at work, a theme that has dominated my life for many years. My aim in writing this book is to help others find fun and satisfaction at work with less trouble than I have, and with much greater speed!”
Kathryn has conducted fun at work with a colleague at AUT University where she works. She shares some of her research findings in the book, as well as strategies developed through life experience. A key research finding has been that people have most fun in an environment where they feel they can be themselves. This is also one of the best ways they can contribute to an organisation. One of Kathryn’s main personal lessons has been that learning to have fun at work is an ongoing process and practice, “it takes effort, but is well worth it!”
The book can be purchased at www.funatwork.co.nz. It is light-hearted but insightful, sharing good strategies for achieving a truly satisfying and meaningful work life. Kathryn expects “this book to resonate with people who are both struggling to achieve fun at work and wanting to contribute to the greater good.”
