Micawber vs Cassandra: Responding to an increasingly uncertain future

To be held at St Cuthbert’s College, Epsom, Auckland from October 2 to 4, 2015 the annual Conference of The Sea of Faith Network invites us to strike a justified balance between optimism and pessimism when regarding predicted catastrophic outcomes. Such threats are said to include disruptive climate change, Middle Eastern political meltdown, medical mis-adventures leading to pandemic deaths, and irreversible species extinction including that ofhomo sapiens.

The Keynote Speakers will be: Sir Lloyd Geering; the business commentator Rod Oram; Kennedy Graham, Green Party M.P. and spokesperson on global affairs; and Anjum Rahman of the Waikato Interfaith Council.

Some suggested options for how to proceed include: worry that we can see the problems but have no power to fix them; hope that the ingenuity of human beings will pull us through; require national leaders to take all dangers seriously; plan mass evacuations which move people away from the tropics, or even from the Earth; learn to grow vegetables and to bake bread; ignore all concerns: “I’ll be dead before any of this happens”
