Press Release: Frankenfoot’s Urban Dream

Frankenfoot – The Redux is the latest Urban Dream Brokerage supported project to grace the city. It is a truly unique all-ages series of shoe up-cycling workshops and exhibition in which old and unwanted shoes are bought back to life by re-assembling and re-imagining them.

Louise Clifton of Shoe School, and Rachel Blackburn of Steep Street fashion label have collaborated to transform a grand old building on George Street into an exhibition installation and workshop space where the public can playfully give shoes destined for the landfill a second life. The artists hope to create discussion around sustainability while encouraging students to create experimental object d'art, which will combine an unlikely juxtaposition of styles.

The venue was brokered by Urban Dream Brokerage Dunedin, an organization that aims to activate vacant space, acting as a bridge between those with ideas and those with space, keeping Dunedin vibrant and colourful. Broker Katrina Thomson said “We ask that artists and community groups present something that doesn’t currently exist in the city. We are looking for things that wouldn’t be in a commercial zone, or in a gallery as such either.”

The public is welcome to register for the one of four Frankenfoot shoe making workshops, and the exhibition will be open for the duration of the Dunedin Fringe Festival, 9 – 19 March.
