Winter Dip On Our Shortest Day For Ocean Health |
Two days out from our shortest day Live Ocean founders Peter Burling and Blair Tuke are putting the call out for people around Aotearoa and beyond to show their support for a healthy ocean with a mid-winter dip in the moana.
Now in its sixth year the annual Live Ocean Winter Dip was created as a social media challenge with more people taking part each year both in New Zealand and around the world. For 2025, the challenge is for Kiwis to take a dip in the ocean on or around Saturday 21 June for the winter solstice, capture it with a photo or video, and share it on social by tagging @itsliveocean #LiveOceanDip.
To encourage people to get amongst it, Blair Tuke, Live Ocean co-founder went for an early morning dip at Milford Beach on Auckland’s north shore today and put the call out; “The annual Live Ocean Winter Dip is on! Get outside your comfort zone this Matariki weekend and share your love for the moana by doing a winter dip with your whānau or mates.”
“It’s an easy way to show you support the Live Ocean ambition for a healthy ocean.”
New Zealand is guardian to the fourth largest ocean space on the planet with our EEZ (Exclusive economic zone) stretching well beyond our coastlines to the deep sea in all directions, yet currently we protect less than 1% of it.
Co-founder Peter Burling says the purpose behind the annual dip has never been more important; “We’ve just been at the United Nations Ocean Conference where the focus was on the ocean and the climate solutions it offers as the planet’s life support system. International and New Zealand experts tell us the ocean is changing fast and marine biodiversity is in decline. We need to move faster to protect and restore the ocean. We need a healthy ocean for a healthy future.”
Live Ocean is a marine conservation foundation committed to scaling up action for the ocean. Founded by sailors and ocean champions, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, the foundation scales up marine science, innovation and outreach to connect and ignite people around the role a healthy ocean plays in a healthy future. We partner with exceptional New Zealand marine scientists, innovators and communicators whose work has global implications for the protection of the ocean and the life in it. To have a healthy future, we must have a healthy ocean.
