A Kiwi Pastime Could Now Create World Champions |
||
A casual kiwi pastime that so many of us have excelled in will now give us a chance to become world champions. This Saturday, 16 May, for the first time, the Aotearoa Stone Skimming Championship (ASSC), presented by NOVUS Glass, will take place on the shores of Lake Hāwea, at Lake Hāwea Station.
Whenever we’re near an estuary, lake, river or pond, it’s not long before a simple stone is picked up and a friendly stone skimming competition starts. As a nation, we’ve become pretty good at it – but are we good enough to become world champions?
150 skimmers from around the country will meet in front of judges, referees, announcers, a Skim-Management Officer (SMO) and spectators this Saturday. Richie Laming, Event Founder from Lake Hāwea Station says, “Whilst there will be a family-friendly atmosphere on the day – DJs, food trucks, entertaining commentary, skits – the competition itself is intense. Sophisticated drone and GPS measurement will ensure the top skims are measured accurately”.
The female and male winners from this weekend's first ASSC will head to Scotland this September to represent New Zealand and compete to become world champions.
Beyond the spectacle of stones skipping across water, the championship has a powerful purpose at its heart: raising funds and awareness for skin cancer charity, Melanoma New Zealand. Tickets sold, competitor fundraising pages, and support from an amazing group of sponsors within the wider New Zealand community are all raising vital funds for Melanoma New Zealand.
New Zealand has one of the highest melanoma rates in the world, with the disease claiming over 300 lives each year. On the day, attendees will be able to access free skin cancer spot checks and education, highlighting the importance of prevention and early detection.
“We’re so grateful to the Aotearoa Stone Skimming Championship and the team at Lake Hawea Station for the hard work and passion that they’ve poured into the event and for choosing to support Melanoma New Zealand,” says Andrea Newland, Chief Executive, Melanoma New Zealand. “So much of melanoma is preventable, and early detection saves lives. If this epic event gets people talking about melanoma and protecting and checking their skin, then it’s already a success.”
The event will be extensively photographed and filmed to support the global interest that is growing in this sport. Internationally recognised documentary Sink or Skim has helped propel this sport to worldwide acclaim.
We look forward to sharing the results and the naming of the female and male team members of ‘The Black Rocks’, and we will continue to share news and updates as they head to the World Championship.
