Kindergarten fire in Richmond
Early this morning a fire extensively damaged Waverley St Kindergarten in Richmond, near Nelson.
The fire service attended and put the fire out, but the cause of the fire is suspicious and the police have been involved.
Alan Gordon, Operations Manager, Nelson District Kindergarten Association says parents were informed before kindergarten this morning. He says it has been very upsetting for the staff, children and families.
“We are working with the Ministry of Education to minimise the stress they may face, and to discuss options for next term,” he said. “The support and concern from this particularly strong community has been amazing.”
Although the building is unusable, the association is are currently looking at options for ensuring children do not miss out on their education while it is repaired.
The Nelson District Kindergarten Association wants to thank both staff and families for the way they are dealing with the aftermath of the fire.
