Seven New Zealand universities featured in
QS World University Rankings®: Social Sciences. Strong in
employers’ top subjects.
London, 4th July, 2011
The social sciences series of the QS World University Rankings® by subject (revealed on 5th July on TopUniversities.com ( http://qs-email.com/76R-GRQL-12JGM7-6KRS6-0/c.aspx )) concludes the release of the 26 individual academic disciplines ranked. The results see seven New Zealand institutions featured in the top 200 for accounting and six in economics, - two subjects identified as preferred by employers around the world.
The QS World University Rankings® by subject are the first to rank universities at individual subject level in the world. With a methodology tailored to fit each subject, the rankings are based on Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation and Citations per Paper.
The research asked global graduate employers to identify the universities that produce the best graduates, both overall and within a given discipline. The most sought-after graduates were those in business, accountancy and finance, and economics.

Ben Sowter, head of QS Intelligence Unit says, , “As global mobility and the fee burden on individual students increases, rankings need to become more detailed and focused to meet the demand for comparative information. Taking on board the views of global employers means that these rankings move away from research and give a sense of the real-world market value of different degree programs.”
He continues, “With 7 universities featuring in all 26 disciplines and in areas highly regarded by employers, New Zealand’s universities truly showcase their strengths in individual subjects in these new rankings.”
