Minister Opens New Hospital Facilities

Thames Hospital's new Clinical Centre and Inpatient Unit will enhance the standard of care and attract new staff into the area, health minister Tony Ryall said today (Friday).

Before cutting the ribbon and officially opening the new buildings, Mr Ryall described the new facilities as wonderful, and something that staff and the community should take great pride in.

"It is a privilege to be here to see the product of five years work to plan and construct this wonderful facility, which I'm sure will be an asset to both the Thames community and Coromandel Peninsula.

"Today we are setting the direction of this hospital for the next generation," he said.

The ceremony marked the official opening of the Thames Clinical Centre and Inpatient unit, two new buildings that opened for use last year and house most of the core hospital services.

The new buildings were part of Waikato DHB's $16million Service and Campus Redevelopment project at Thames Hospital that also included a new kitchen and dining are, construction of a bund wall and relocation of the Whanau Facility.

Mr Ryall said it was a substantial development that will improve the care provided at Thames Hospital.

"It is the result of significant effort, professional expertise, personal commitment, and the utmost regard for the health needs of this community.

"Thanks to all of you here who put so much if your time, talent and energy into making this happen," he said.

More than 200 people attended the ceremony including Waikato DHB board members, management and staff; local MPs and mayors; members of the community; and Thames Hospital staff.

Waikato DHB deputy chair Sally Christie also spoke about how the ceremony is an important and exciting occasion.

"Today is a celebration, not just for Thames but for the whole Thames-Coromandel community and hospital staff too.

"Thames Hospital has always been a key hub of the community and I credit that to the strong community support it continues to receive.

"Function before form was the mantra when we were planning for these new buildings and I am confident we have achieved that with staff now able to work more effectively," she said.

Mrs Christie also took the time to thank hospital staff, past and present, who have waited a long time for the new facilities.

"You have patiently waited for this day to come.

"Your ongoing commitment to this hospital is what makes it such a huge asset to the community."
