Thames Birthing Unit construction on hold

Construction of a new primary birthing unit in Thames, due to open in
June, is on hold.

The DHB announced 18 months ago it would construct the unit on Mary
Street after a survey found that more than 90 per cent of women would
give birth in Thames if there were a new primary birthing facility.

The estimated building costs then were just over $890,000.

However, Waikato DHB Service and Campus Redevelopment (SCR) project
director Ian Wolstencroft said prices, which came back after the job
went to tender, were far too high.

"This means we need to review the project specifications and the
scope of work involved. That will delay construction.

"We're doing everything we can to ensure this project happens and
we're working with tender applicants to obtain a price estimate within
our budget," Mr Wolstencroft said.

The original plans would largely stay the same with no reduction of
planned birthing places.

Jacquie Mitchell, Thames Hospital manager said the hospital would
continue to provide the same excellent midwife-led, primary birthing
services in the meantime.
