Sacrificing Seconds May Save Children’s Lives! |

Sacrificing Seconds Of Journey Time Will Save Children’s Lives!
Following the tragedy on Linwood Avenue in Christchurch, where one child was killed and another is in a serious condition and another child was killed a day later by a speeding car in Auckland, it seems a timely reminder that speeds are unacceptable around children, especially near schools. If someone, lost control of their vehicle outside the Swannanoa School in North Canterbury, where the speed limit is 100km/h, the outcome would be most likely be a massacre of school children. Sadly there are many schools in New Zealand with speed limit concerns.
Whilst the country mourns for the families involved in this horrendous accident, I send my condolences to the families involved. And although I feel, that it is inappropriate to jump on the bandwagon of a child’s death, I never the less take this opportunity to remind you, that vehicles are still passing many schools throughout New Zealand at totally unacceptable speeds!
The Government likes to place the blame for this in the hands of local Councils. However the Minister of Transport, Steven Joyce in joint effort with the NZ Transport Agency need to bring in a law, to lower speeds to 40km/h outside all schools. I have set up a petition asking for a law to be introduced and it is currently being well supported throughout the country.
As we have seen it can take seconds to kill an innocent child, but sacrificing a few seconds of journey time will save lives. This can only be brought about by the introduction of a law.
