Make a Stand Against Violence, Wear a White Ribbon

Media Statement – For Immediate Release 24 November, 2010

Make a Stand Against Violence, Wear a White Ribbon

Relationship Services, one of New Zealand’s largest providers of stopping violence programmes, is encouraging people to make a stand against violence by wearing a white ribbon this week, and by speaking up if they know someone is affected by violence.

“Wearing a white ribbon is a simple way that people can show they are against violence,” said Jeff Sanders, Relationship Services Chief Executive. Thursday is White Ribbon Day, an international day focused on stopping violence towards women.

Mr Sanders also encouraged people to do something if they were concerned about someone being in a violent relationship. “We know it’s difficult but it can make a huge difference to the lives of people you care about.”

Relationship Services works with thousands of people throughout the country who want to improve their relationships with those around them. “Our Stopping Violence programmes and counselling can change people’s lives,” said Mr Sanders.

Relationship Services has some tips and suggestions on how to talk to people about violence on its website, www.relate.org.nz.

“Relationships can be difficult and challenging but violence is never the answer.”
