Wellington's random autumn weather plucked a mild day out of the hat for Saturday, day 2 of the second test against the West Indies. Starting the day at 182/8, the West Indies' tail was quickly edged out by Kyle Mills (53/3) for the addition of only ten runs. After a short break, New Zealand then set out in pursuit, suffering early nerves when they lost both openers Marshall (3) and How (0) cheaply.

Fulton (75) and captain Fleming (97) then wrestled back the initiative with a partnership of 165 for the third wicket, putting New Zealand firmly on top. Fleming's fifty came at a run-a-ball, but he perished going for his century with the total on 168, caught by Bravo on the third man boundary.

Astle (65) proceeded to carry on the job of building a first innings lead, helped by a cameo from McCullum (23) and an 86-run partnership with Vettori (42). New Zealand closed the second day of the test on 335/7, a lead of 143, hoping to extend their dominance over a demoralised West Indies attack into the third day of the test.
