Matthews Defends Corrections' Handling Of Burton |
||

This morning Barry Matthews the Chief Executive of the Department of Corrections faced the media following the release of an internal report into Corrections' management of Convicted killer Graham Burton. Mr Burton who was on parole following his release from jail in mid-2006 after serving 14 years killed once again while on the run from Police in January 2007. Mr Matthews considered that Burton's parole was 'well managed'.

As well as taking questions from the media a man Burton assaulted while trying to evade Police in the Lower Hutt hills – Nicholas Rae - also attended the conference and asked a number of probing questions of Mr Matthews. Mr Rae who had his nose broken by Burton was of the opinion that Corrections' management of Burton was somewhat less than 'well managed'.
