Scoop Audio (20 Minutes): Audio
on demand of Prime Minister John Key's press conference
today following an emergency cabinet meeting over the
Christchurch earthquake. The PM read a prepared statement -
at times becoming a little emotional. He concluded his
statement saying that a state of national emergency would be
declared and he then answered questions. He said the death
toll had now reached 75 and that 100s were missing possibly
trapped. He thanked the international assistance and
answered questions about the possible economic impacts of
the quake. He said he felt it was likely that the CBD of
Christchurch would be out of commission for some time and
that this would have a much more serious impact on the
economy of the city than the September earthquake.
