Phil Goff and Annette King will stand down as party leader and deputy on Tuesday December 13.
This afternoon's announcement was made after Labour's first caucus meeting following their election defeat – a meeting which was subject to a five-hour press stakeout by the press.
Current candidates for leader or deputy leader include David Parker, David Cunliffe, David Shearer, Grant Robertson and Nania Mahuta.
Goff and King both said they intend to remain in Parliament to represent their electorate as back bench MPs.
Goff also paid tribute to outgoing Labour MPs and welcomed the new intake.
