Privacy Bill Passes

New privacy legislation passed into law on Friday afternoon.

Associate Justice Minister Chester Burrows said the Privacy (Information Sharing) Bill, divided into three bills, updates privacy laws to enable better data sharing, while protecting people’s privacy.

Amongst other things it allows information on an individual to be shared when a person’s life is at risk.

Clare Curren said Labour would be supporting the bill, but it was only covering a small part of the overhaul of privacy laws that was needed.

The bill passed its third reading by 104 to 15 with the Greens and Mana opposed.

MPs began the third reading of the International Finance Agreements Amendment Bill.
