The Maori Party says it is sad that Phil Goff's only mention of Maori in his state of the nation speech was a reference to unemployed teenage Maori youth as part of a lost generation.

"The Maori Party prefers to focus on the potential of our young people who are, after all, the leaders of tomorrow," Maori Party MP Rahui Katene said.

"Our Maori girls and boys are not to blame for the complex socio-economic problems they are facing - these are problems that are systematic and existed even when his party had the reins.

"He's telling us what we already know, but doesn't give any solutions," she said.
