Abuse shows need for social worker register

More than 75% of publicised cases of abuse and misconduct by social workers were carried out by unregistered staff, proving the need for better oversight of those looking after our most vulnerable, Labour’s Social Development spokesperson Carmel Sepuloni says.

“The abuses committed by unregistered social workers included dangerous driving with a child in their care leaving the child paralysed, having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old in Child, Youth and Family care and helping someone escape from jail.

“Despite the vitally important role they play looking after people in need, the Government refuses to regulate social workers and ensure proper oversight.

“Figures from the Parliamentary Library show that of the 17 major cases of neglect or abuse since 2003, 13 of them were by unregistered social workers.

“The Government has brought in registration for security companies, but refuses to do it for social workers. You need to be registered to work the door of a pub but not to be a social worker. It’s ridiculous and it’s leading to abuse.

“My Member’s Bill being debated by parliament would require social workers to be registered. These figures show the urgent need to get proper oversight and accountability,” says Carmel Sepuloni.
