Key last to board the City Rail Link

John Key’s five-year-late commitment to fund Auckland’s desperately need City Rail Link shows the short-term thinking his Government is known for, Opposition Leader Andrew Little says.

“Today’s announcement will be a relief for Auckland’s frustrated commuters who have endured years of clogged roads while the Government sat back and criticised this vital transport link.

“But it’s typical of this Government that they had to be dragged kicking and screaming to get to this point. John Key’s failure of ambition has been holding back growth and prosperity in our biggest city for years. His lack of leadership in this area has cost jobs and strangled businesses.

“His annual State of the Nation speech today featured only a last-minute announcement of something the rest of New Zealand has been calling for for years. Where was his vision for how to tackle the big issues our country is facing?

“Where were the plans to fix rising unemployment, or our housing crisis? What did our Prime Minister have to say about rising inequality in New Zealand?

“New Zealanders deserve more than a Prime Minister who refuses to plan for our long-term future,” Andrew Little says.
