Evidence Of Age Cannot Be Step To National ID

29 July 1999

Evidence Of Age Provision For 18 Year Olds Cannot Be First Step To National Id Cards

United New Zealand leader, Hon Peter Dunne says his Party will resist any attempts to turn the new ‘evidence of age’ provision for 18 year olds drinkers into a national identity card system.

“We will strenuously oppose any Government which seeks to do so.”

“This cannot be the thin end of the wedge.”

“United opposed moves to establish photographic drivers licences last year as an assault on individual liberty, and will do so again should a similar situation ever arise.”

“New Zealanders do not want a national identity card system, and United, as a liberal Party, will resist any efforts, now or in the future, to turn the ‘evidence of age’ provision into the first step towards one,” he says.
