Arnott’s pressured to change policy on GE

Arnott’s pressured to change policy on GE

After a short and very successful campaign by the Peoples Moratorium Enforcement Agency (PMEA), Arnott’s maker of some of New Zealand's favourite biscuits has decided to reintroduce a non-GE policy.

The PMEA had planned to target Arnott’s for a National Day of Action on December 13 demanding a commitment to source non-GE ingredients. After great interest from the public in taking action the company changed its public policy from compliance with labelling legislation to actively sourcing non-GE ingredients. In response to this announcement the National Day of Action will no longer be taking place.

“We welcome Arnott’s decision and commend them for listening to their customers.” said Lenka Rochford, a PMEA spokesperson. “This shows how effective consumer pressure and direct action can be. It is a great victory for the GE movement”

“Since the government has done nothing to safeguard New Zealanders from GE contaminated food, it is up to us, the people of Aotearoa to keep this country GE free. We will do anything necessary to achieve this.”

“PMEA will continue to advocate the use of non-violent direct action to oppose the contamination of our fields and food.” Said Rochford.
