Support for Locked-Out Workers Grows

Christchurch supporters group formed

Support for the locked-out Progressive Enterprises distribution workers is growing in Christchurch. On Monday a supporters group representing concerned organisations and individuals who want to support the locked-out workers was formed.

ShelfRESPECT Supporters spokesperson Christine Dann said that the group would be rolling out a series of support actions over the next few weeks.

First up is the Saturday Supporters Club, which will join the locked-out workers picket at the Church Corner Countdown store every Saturday morning from 9 till noon. Supporters who are free during the week will join pickets at other sites. Solidarity strolls, with supporters carrying a donations bucket and leaflets explaining why the lock-out happened and how to support the workers, will take place around supermarkets supplied by Progressive Enterprises.

In the pipeline are a family day with children's entertainment, a benefit concert and a benefit dinner.

''Ordinary, decent New Zealanders just can't stand by and let the Walmart model of worker exploitation be imposed on our friends and neighbours,'' said Ms Dann. ''ShelfRESPECT Supporters will be sending Progressive Enterprises the message loud and clear – give your workers a fair go or get out of business.''
