ARC councillor supports Carnival

RAM media release 2 March 2007

ARC councillor supports Carnival Against Carmageddon

Auckland Regional councillor Robyn Hughes gives full support to ClimAction's Carnival Against Carmageddon which will take over Auckland's Karangahape Rd today (Saturday 3rd).

"ClimAction's demand for free & frequent public transport is exactly the same policy that I, as a RAM councillor, have been promoting for the last three years," said Robyn Hughes. RAM is the popular name for Residents Action Movement, a grassroots ticket which won 87,000 votes in the 2004 ARC election.

"RAM is getting ever more support for this boldly realistic policy which is so necessary to tackle Greater Auckland's car congestion, high pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. In this coming October's local body elections, a central plank in the RAM Manifesto will be free & frequent public transport."

"I was asked by ClimAction to liaise with the police over the K'Rd carnival," said Robyn Hughes. "I have been assured by the police that they will co-operate with ClimAction's five-hour road closure starting at 3.30pm."

"I applaud what ClimAction is doing to mobilise a grassroots groundswell for badly-needed policy U-turns to tackle looming climate chaos. I will be at the carnival, and I hope that other councillors also come along to give support."
