Sentencing for $5 Million Worth of Meth Sends Strong Warning

Today's sentencing of two people for importing around $5 million worth of crystal methamphetamine sends a strong warning that drug trafficking isn't worth the risk.

In the Auckland High Court today, two Canadian nationals were each sentenced to ten years and six months total for importing a class A controlled drug, and possession for supply of that drug.

Customs officers at Auckland International Airport found the bulk of the drug packed into 43 identically-sized picture frames during an x-ray examination in August last year.

Around 100 grams of the Class A controlled drug crystal methamphetamine was discovered within each frame. The total street value of this find is approximately $5 million.

New Zealand Customs Manager Drug Investigations, Bill Perry, says: "Crystal methamphetamine is an evil drug and today's sentencing shows that if you get caught you will pay a heavy price."

"It also highlights that criminal groups will go to great lengths to conceal illegal drugs at international borders. Today's sentencing is a good result for Customs, but we must remain constantly alert to stay one step ahead of criminals."
