Auckland Sri Lankans show appreciation to
their war victims.
Sri Lankan Returned Services Association of New Zealand has organised a Sri Lankan food fair in aid of war victims in Sri Lanka who have been disabled or wounded in the 26 year old war against terrorism in Sri Lanka.
“Project Appreciation” which was launched recently by the association includes a scholarship programme for children of families affected by the war says Wing Commander Nalin Wickremasinghe the secretary for the association. He added that providing artificial limbs for the needy disabled is another objective of this project.
The association decided not to burden the community in donating large sums of money during the recession and they decided to organise a food fair that will provide an opportunity for non Sri Lankans to get acquainted with the unique and tasty Sri Lankan cuisine at affordable prices.
Unfortunately there are no Sri Lankan restaurants in Auckland although a couple of take away outlets have emerged lately.
Therefore, this is a amazing opportunity for Aucklanders to sample Sri Lankan delicacies such as Hoppers or Aappa, a delicate lacelike rice muffin which has an egg baked into it Sunnyside up , String hoppers, delicate rounds of steamed rice flour noodle like strings with coconut sambal and curries, Thosai, the Sri Lankan version of the South Indian Dosa served with vegetarian accompaniments, rice and Sri Lankan curries which are spicy flavoured with coconut and a myriad of spices, a range of finger food and many more.
The food fair will be held on Saturday 4 July at the Panmure District School, Mt.Wellington Highway, Panmure from 10.00 a.m to 3.00 p.m. The association urges Aucklanders to bring their friends and family to not only sample a unique cuisine but also to make a difference to many lives.
