Public Meeting to organise water campaign

Public Meeting to organise water campaign

The group Right to Water has organised a public meeting for those in the
Wellington area opposed to the commercialisation of water.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday 22nd July at 6.30 pm in the
Mezzanine Floor Meeting Room of the Wellington Public Library.

“Water commercialisation is being hinted at by both central and local
government. We’ve noticed increasing numbers of people and groups
expressing concern at this prospect. People find the ideas of user-pays
for household water and private sector involvement in management and
delivery of water repugnant”, said Right to Water spokesperson, Maria
McMillan.

“Knowing the damage that user-pays can cause, especially to the many
households already struggling financially, most of us don’t want to see
people charged for an essential service. We certainly don’t want to see
companies profit from involvement in that service”, said Ms McMillan.

“This meeting is a chance for those of us passionate about human rights
and social justice to organise and plan. Communities are still
suffering from past decisions to sell off New Zealand state assets and
to commercialise public services. We have no intention of letting water
go the same way”, she said.
