National Hui on setting New Zealand’s 2020
emissions target
The Climate Change Iwi Leaders Group
and the Maori Reference Group Executive are holding a
National Hui on setting New Zealand’s 2020 Emissions
Target.
The government intends to announce New Zealand’s Emissions Target on 10 August. We would like to hear yours views on what you consider the emissions target should be for the Maori Economy.
What is this issue about?
International negotiations to address climate
change are reaching a critical point, leading up to a major
United Nations conference in Copenhagen late this year. An
important issue in these international negotiations is the
commitment New Zealand makes on a greenhouse gas emissions
target for 2020.
This decision has significant
ramifications for the Maori Economy. The challenge for
government is finding a balance between the need to make
progress in reducing emissions to protect the environment
and the impacts on jobs, investments and households. Maori
will be impacted across the all these areas.
New Zealand intends to announce its policy target for 2020 at the next stage of international negotiations in Bonn in August. As part of these efforts, the government intends to publicly state New Zealand’s 2020 emissions target policy in August and they wish to hear your views so they can be taken into account when setting New Zealand's 2020 emissions target policy.
Has there been any engagement with Maori to
date?
Earlier this month Minister Smith met with the
Climate Change Iwi Leadership Group, Chairs and Chief
Executives of our Maori Incorporations/Trusts and the Maori
Reference Group Executive. At this hui the CCILG clearly
stated that Iwi and our Maori Trusts and Incorporations
would meet again in August, before the government makes a
decision on the 2020 Target. So that government would be
fully cognizant and informed of a Maori view of what a 2020
Target should be.
To assist us in forming a view, the
Climate Change Iwi Leadership Group got agreement from the
government that they would commission an economic analysis
of the Maori Economy, specifically identifying what the
potential impacts on the Maori Economy would be relative to
various 2020 Emissions Targets. This report is being
completed by NZIER and Infometrics and will be completed
by
30 July 2009.
We will present the findings of this report and other issues for consideration at the National Hui.
The National Hui will be at,
Westpac Stadium
Trust
Wellington
Date: Tuesday 4 August
Time:
10am –
12.30pm.
