Look for your Local Elections Voting Pack this week
Voters can start voting now for the local authority elections.
This is local residents’ opportunity to have their say in the governance of their regional council, local council and district health board for the next 3 years.
Voting packs started arriving in letterboxes on Friday and all papers are expected to be delivered by Wednesday 22 September. People who have not received their papers by then should contact their local Council Electoral Officer.
Voting papers list the
candidates for the local elections for representation on
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Hastings District Council,
Napier City Council, Central Hawke’s Bay District Council,
Wairoa District Council, and the Hawke’s Bay District
Health Board.
People can vote as soon as they wish, as
long as their papers are mailed to arrive before noon on
Saturday 9 October.
The voting papers use both the Single Transferable Voting (STV) and the First Past the Post (FPP) voting systems. The STV system is used for District Health Board voting while FPP is used for selecting candidates for the Councils. The voting papers contain clear instructions on how to vote using both systems, and people should remind themselves first to be sure they are using the right voting method.
Although electoral rolls have now closed, people can still enrol to vote. However, they will need to request special voting papers. The last date to enrol is Friday 8 October. Enrolment forms and information are available from Council electoral officers.
An elections portal has been launched this year to assist voters to find out more about candidates and for candidates to address particular issues of concern in their electorates. Go to www.elections2010.co.nz . Information on candidates is also on Council websites, in local newspapers and inside the voting pack.
