Guru's Election A Historic Win For Kapiti's Ethnic Community

The Kapiti Ethnic Forum congratulates Kapiti's biggest electorate, the Paraparaumu Ward, for electing Kapiti’s first Asian Councillor. K.Gurunathan, or Guru as he is popularly known, was elected on the basis of his contribution to the community over 15 years as an outstanding investigative journalist and public watchdog.

"It's a fact that Guru is of Indian origin and his election in the midst of the national debate over Paul Henry's remarks is testimony to the growing cultural and political maturity of Kapiti as a community of increasingly diverse cultures." says KEF member Helen Keivom.

Kapiti’s ethnic communities are understandably appreciative of the support given to Guru from mainstream New Zealanders and look forward to Guru’s continuing contribution to promoting greater understanding and interaction between our diverse communities including local iwi, Kapiti's Treaty partners. New Zealand's demographic is evolving across the country and Guru’s election is a positive indication that Kapiti’s democratic process is capable of reflecting these changes.
