Second airport protest planned

Second airport protest planned

Another vehicle blockade will protest at Wellington Airport on Monday 30 May against the proposed Wellywood sign.

The driving protest follows a successful demonstration earlier this week where a reported 80 – 100 vehicles brought traffic around the airport to a stand-still.

Protest spokesperson Andy Boreham says demonstrations will take place every Monday evening between 6 and 7pm “until this debacle is over”.

He says support for another vehicle protest is huge. “Our first demonstration was so successful and everyone is eager to stage another driving protest that’s even bigger and even louder,” he says. “We want Wellington Airport to realise just how seriously Wellingtonians feel about the Wellywood sign.”

“We won’t sit by and let Wellington Airport brand our city when they clearly don’t have the mandate or the support of the people of Wellington.”

Andy says the protest will be peaceful and that the group do not support calls for vandalism if the sign is erected. “Steve Fitzgerald called us ‘ugly’ and suggested we are bullies after our earlier protest, which is far from the truth. We see this as a larger issue and think our actions speak carloads!”

Those interested in joining the driving protest are urged to join the Facebook group, or just to show up on the evening in vehicles to illustrate their support. “We want to give the people of Wellington a real vehicle to demonstrate their opposition!”

The protest will take place at Wellington International Airport on Monday 30 May from 6pm – 7pm.
