French Elections: the impact of the votes

On May 6th, the people of France elected the new president, M. François Hollande.

Just weeks later, France is voting for the 577 deputies to sit at the National Assembly.
The assembly carries out two main functions: passing laws and supervising government action. Its support is essential to the Government.

For the very first time, French citizens based overseas will be electing eleven deputies (or Members of Parliament) to represent them, for a term of five years. They voted on Sunday 3 June. Attached are the provisional results.

In France, the first round of voting is to be held on Sunday 10 June. The second round will take place for all on June 17th.

On June 18th, the day of the results in New Zealand, the Ambassador of France, H.E. Francis Etienne will be delivering a talk entitled French elections: the impact of the votes. The conference will cover:
- The role and the importance of the National Assembly in the French political system;
- The roles of the deputies representing the French citizens based overseas;
- The issues at stake for France and Europe.

A series of questions and answers, followed by refreshments will conclude the talk.

The forum will be held at Victoria University from 12:30pm until 1:30pm in the Hunter Council Chamber on Kelburn Campus.
