Mike Tyson insulted all victims of rape by denying, on national TV this week, culpability for a conviction of rape for which he spent several years in prison, says Alison Broad, chairperson for the Women’s Self Defence Network Wāhine Toa, a national organisation of self defence teachers working against sexual violence. “Everyone would agree that rape is one of the most serious crimes a person can commit.”

“The Government’s decision to not grant Mike Tyson a visa to New Zealand is the right one” says Ms Broad. “New Zealand has clear standards that must be met for people to be granted a visa. Mike Tyson simply does not meet the standard.”
